Design Philosphy

As a creative and thoughtful landscape architect, Selene Weber weaves together her understanding of natural processes, site features, and construction materials and methods to create compelling, evolving, beautiful, sustainable landscapes.

Selene approaches landscape design as an opportunity to go beyond solving site problems and meeting programmatic requirements; her aim is to influence and guide one's entire experience of a place. This necessarily involves the capability to manipulate earth, plants, structure, and water to choreograph movement and rest, compose views, engage the senses, and highlight ecology. By revealing what is true about the site, an authentic sense of place is expressed and a deeper, more meaningful connection to our environment is achieved. Selene's design sensibility tends toward a minimal palette attained through a successive paring down of ideas until a graceful solution emerges.

I have found it helpful to think of a garden as sculpture. Not sculpture in the ordinary sense of an object to be viewed. But sculpture that is large enough and perforated enough to walk through.

And open enough to present no barrier to movement, and broken enough to guide the experience which is essentially a communion with the sky. This is a garden.
