Hillside Flow

The inspiration for this garden was simply a response to the house’s situation halfway down a very steep hillside, requiring careful attention to channeling water. The flow of water became the guiding principle not only for solving the drainage issues, but for choreographing movement throughout the garden. Paths terminate in terraces just as rivers widen into pools. The boulders unearthed during excavation tumble throughout the garden. On the south side, these boulders are used to negotiate a steep slope by supporting a series of steps and landings, evoking the idea of a waterfall. Actual drainage occurs adjacent to this path in a cobble swale that dissipates into the woods. (Project with Little & Reid Innovative Gardens)
